How Exposed Skin Care Works

Exposed skin careThe Exposed acne treatment system combines science and nature to provide a “full spectrum approach” to battling acne.  According to Exposed’s website, the treatment has been developed by “a collaborative effort of dermatologists, cosmetologists, naturopaths and chemists.”  The treatment system is designed to clear existing acne, prevent new acne, even skin tone, and reduce scarring.  Instead of fighting against your skin in the way that many acne treatments do, Exposed Skin Care system uses a unique combination of “powerful scientific actives” and “soothing natural extracts” to return “your skin to the natural and healthy balance that it was meant to have.”

These actives, or ingredients, work to eliminate from deep within the skin the bacteria that causes acne.  The treatment also exfoliates skin and unclogs pores, to prevent the formation of new acne.  Many of Exposed’s ingredients have been selected to help skin renew its healthy complexion.

According to Exposed’s own frequently asked questions page, most people will see positive results from using the Exposed system within 2-5 weeks.  Exposed is recommended for people of all ages and all skin types.  Unlike products that instruct acne sufferers to continue using them indefinitely, Exposed Skin Care states that once your acne has cleared up, you may reduce your frequency of use “to every 2 days or whatever you feel comfortable with.”

Exposed Skin Care’s website freely admits that some people may experience occasional breakouts while using the Exposed system.  They suggest that you continue with your current system and see their website for information about further eliminating acne through diet and lifestyle adjustments.

Company Information

The Exposed Skin Care company was founded in 2002 and is based in Seattle, Washington, USA.  They produce only acne treatment products, which are developed through a collaborative effort among dermatologists, chemists, and other skin care professionals.  Their mission statement is “To provide our customers with the most effective acne treatment system by employing the most advanced combination of Scientific and Natural ingredients.”

The Better Business Bureau has given Exposed Skin Care a grade of F because of numerous complaints filed against it, delay in responding to complaints, and failure to respond to some complaints.  The BBB does advise consumers to think about the size of a business and the number of customers it serves when checking the number of complaints a company has received.  Of the 19 complaints filed against Exposed over the last 36 months, 12 have been within the last year.  Four of these are currently listed as “no response,” and they fall into the categories of Billing, Customer Service, Guarantee, and Refund Issues.

Product Specifications

The entire Exposed Skin Care line consists of nine products – four are used as the ‘backbone’ of the system and the remaining products are available to enhance the treatment plan if you wish.

Step one of the core system is Exposed Facial Cleanser, which comes in a four ounce bottle and is soap-free, non-comedogenic and hypo-allergenic.  Its ingredients include “a special formulation of alpha & beta hydroxy acids and olive leaf extract,” salicylic acid, and pro vitamin B5.  Potentially skin-irritating ingredients like lauryl and laureth sulfates have been intentionally left out of the Facial Cleanser.  In addition to cleansing skin, this product will penetrate pores to kill acne-causing bacteria.  The Facial Cleanser should be used twice each day.  The website gives a warning that washing more often may lead to overly dry skin and more acne.

Exposed’s Clearing Tonic, also packaged in a four ounce bottle, clears pores and eliminates harmful contaminants from skin.  It contains salicylic acid, alpha hydroxy acids, olive leaf extract and witch hazel to discourage bacterial growth.  Essential extracts of aloe-vera, allantoin and pure hyaluronic acid are included to revive and nourish skin.

Two products make up step three of the Exposed Skin Care system.  Acne Treatment Serum, in a 1.7 ounce tube, is to be used in the morning following the cleansing and toning steps.  It will deliver “a special formulation of micronized benzoyl and olive leaf extract deep into your pores” along with green tea extract and azelaic acid.  Clear Pore Serum is applied before bed and comes in a 1.7 ounce tube as well.  A lightweight gel, this serum clears pores and balances skin while you sleep.  With vitamins, antioxidants, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, and licorice root, Clear Pore Serum repairs damaged, blemished skin and protects skin from moisture loss.

The enhancement products include Moisture Complex, Clarifying Mask, Microderm Scrub, Derm-X Cloth, and Probiotic Complex, which is an herbal supplement designed to support the body in defeating acne.  For those who want to reduce the appearance of scars, Microderm Scrub and Derm-X Cloth will both help clear acne scarring.

When discussing potential side effects, Exposed says, “Occasionally, people who use Exposed will experience a tingling sensation for the first several days of use, this is normal.”  No other side effects are mentioned.

Summary

The Exposed system seems to really work for many people, but of course some have problems and aren’t pleased with their experience.  In searching reviews for Exposed Skin Care, I noticed some pros and cons that I want to share with you.

Pros:  Quick reduction of blemishes, not drying to skin, gentle for even sensitive skin, makes skin feel soft.  Most people are writing that they notice less acne and clearer skin within two weeks or less.  This isn’t true of everyone, of course, since some people will take longer to respond to the ingredients.  One lady noted that for her, Exposed “takes a while before you notice BIG changes.”

Cons:  Not available in stores, pricing and shipping, very expensive to purchase from overseas, may burn skin if applied too heavily.  While the product directions say to apply a thin layer of Acne Treatment Serum, some people apply a heavier layer and have had unpleasant effects.  One person who did this writes, “It did not hurt, but my face looked like I got a sun burn.”

Some reviewers have mentioned that Exposed’s fragrance is not as pleasant as some other products.  One person at Acne.org writes that Exposed “makes my skin look shiny and oily,” and another writes that Exposed “made my face so oily that I couldn’t stand it.”  These seem to be relatively rare experiences, based on the reviews and comments I’ve read.

Best Acne Treatments 2009 at 10acne.com gives Exposed Skin Care its Editor’s Choice Award and the top spot as the #1 best acne treatment.  Exposed receives that #1 spot at Acne-Reviews, Acne Away, and Top Acne Treatment.  It is included in other top three and top ten lists as well, yet other review sites disagree.  Some simply don’t include Exposed on their lists, while Acne Cures Revealed specifically says it does not recommend Exposed Skin Care.

These differing opinions are likely the result of the differences each individual will experience when using any acne treatment.  For some, Exposed clears acne fast, but it can’t be the perfect solution for everyone.

As a final note, despite the poor grade Exposed Skin Care gets from the Better Business Bureau, I didn’t find anyone calling the company a scam.  The word is thrown around so freely, but I didn’t see it applied in this case.  Exposed gets good ratings from a large number of current and previous users who have seen it work incredibly well to clear acne.
